On November 14, 1969, Apollo 12 blasted off, taking Surveyor 3 U.S. Moon probe (April 17, 1967). Surveyor 3 soft-landed on the Moon. It tested the soil and sent 6,315 photos back to the Earth. Surveyor 3 remained undisturbed on the lunar surface for 31 months until Alan Bean of Apollo 12 retrieved portions of the probe. Scientists on Earth studied the effects of solar radiation on the exposed surface of Surveyor 3. and the crew was able to continue the mission. The Apollo 12 mission demonstrated a precision Moon landing, marking the second lunar landing of the lunar module (LM), nicknamed Intrepid. The landing was made within 590 feet (180 m) of Surveyor 3. The mission also deployed major scientific experiments and acquired samples from the space probe Surveyor 3, which some 31 months previously had soft landed on the lunar surface and sent back more than 6,000 pictures.
